To all those saying that Branson was an idiot leaving Sybil in Dublin…

Sorry, but think for a moment. If he’d gone back to the flat to get her then she would’ve been in even more danger, and he knows that Sybil can manage by herself. Why don’t you?

And yes, Tom should’ve told Sybil about those meetings, but if he’s interested in the cause then you can’t blame him for being interested in what they talk about at these meetings. He knows he’s not going to get involved in violence, and he didn’t. The only mistakes he made was being at that place at that time, and not telling Sybil about those meetings.

Bet On Me Update:

Just a slight change this time with the pennywhistle (although here it’s being represented by a flute) tune at the end. I realised that the oboe tune in “Emancipation” (Sybil and Tom’s tune) goes down after the triplets, not up. So I changed the pennywhistle melody at the end so it goes up after the triplets and not down. Good good. Now, the exciting news! We’re setting a date for our first recording sessions on Thursday, and it will most likely be next Monday and/or Tuesday. We might need only one session, we might need more like five, but we’ll be recording very soon, and then as soon as that’s all done, we’ll send it off to be professionally mixed and mastered, then it’ll be up on itunes and spotifiy and youtube and tumblr faster than you can say “Irish socialist chauffeur”!

Oh, and Happy Downton Day dearies!!

What do you think Tom and Sybil's relationship is like? We haven't seen them much in the few episodes of season three so far, and it's so interesting.

I know, it’s sad we haven’t seen much interaction between them so far this series. :( Hopefully we’ll get more soon, what with the baby on the way!

I think that they are very much in love, and are very happy! I think they’re also very happy about finally being able to show their love in public, because they always seem to be holding hands, or placing a hand on the other’s arm, or smiling sweetly at each other! I think that they’re the kind of couple who really value being able to do that kind of thing. After so long of being careful not to let anything show, it’s really something special to them that they can now show it to the world! Reminds me of a certain song I know about letting the world know, and newspapers…hmmm…

I also get the impression that they’re the kind of couple who like a good argument once in a while! They’re not afraid of arguing. They did it before they got together and they’ll do it for as long as they live I’m sure! They realise that they’re both very opinionated people, and sometimes a good argument is the perfect thing to release a bit of unwanted tension between them. They won’t see it as anything worrying at all. In fact, I can imagine them deliberately trying to start an argument with the other, because they love arguing with them and they love that dynamic to their relationship (as long as it’s  not a worrying argument. You know, the kind which can hurt your relationship with someone. I can’t imagine they’d want to start those kinds of arguments). If they do argue, and it’s a bad kind of argument, then I get the impression that they both work past it without too much trouble, because they’ve been through so much already, they realise that they don’t want to throw it all away over something that is (probably) quite silly. They’ve invested a lot in this relationship, and they’ll do anything to make sure and to prove to others that it’s a sound investment! :D

Again, I know this has nothing to do with Downton Abbey…

but I really need to get examples of text messages to write a short essay about the language used in texts and age groups. Is it too much to ask from you lovely people if you could drop me a message containing an SMS (or two) you’ve got your hands on, and the sender’s (approximate) age? You don’t have to write the sender’s name, just the message and the age. Is that alright?

Keep Calm and Downton on, my fellow Downtonians.

Alternate explanation for next week’s episode?

One final thought and then I’m done.

My dear husband (my own radically political Irish man) is an academic historian.  I was re-watching the trailer for next week’s episode and he threw out his own suggestion about what is happening next week.  He told me that it didn’t make a lot of sense for someone who is in deep trouble in Ireland to run to England.  He suggested that it is Sybil who got into some sort of trouble and not the other way around, and that it is Tom who ran to England to try to get Lord Grantham to come to her rescue, thereby appearing to have abandoned her.  This could explain why he is crying when he sees her again and not the other way around, and why Sybil called to let everyone know that she is alright.

Thoughts?

(blogger note: It’s a very interesting theory, and based on just the preview it could certainly make sense. However, the spoiler synopsis of the next episode that was released around Wednesday definitely says that Tom is in trouble with the Irish police. It would certainly be interesting thought if it were the other way round!)

A bit more Branson defense…

In reply to a post saying that “Tom doesn’t change for Sybil, yet Sybil has to run away for him”.

There’s no reason for Tom to change. Tom doesn’t need to change to be like the aristocracy. That’s not who he is or ever will be and he shouldn’t have to try and be like them. Yes, he might have to go along with a couple of their traditions whilst they’re at Downton, but he shouldn’t have to change. Nobody should have to change if there’s nothing wrong with how they are. Secondly, Sybil doesn’t want him to change. If he did then he wouldn’t be the man she fell in love with. She doesn’t want an aristocrat as a husband, she wants him. She wants him for all his virtues and vices. If he changed then he would break her heart. Thirdly, yes Sybil did have to run away with him for them to be together, but that was her choice and that was something she willing did. She wanted to make that sacrifice in the end, because she knew that she would be getting something so much better in return. Don’t forget that Tom has made sacrifices for her too. He’s had to endure the hurtful comments he no doubt would’ve received from his friends and acquaintances in Dublin, the harsh judgement of all his family and friends. Many would’ve seen this as a betrayal and treated him badly as a result. He’s now having to be put in incredibly difficult social situations whilst staying at Downton, and he’s having to endure the endlessly patronising comments and remarks from her family. It’s no piece of cake for him either.

I think this comment is him basically thinking that Sybil is asking him to change into something he shouldn’t have to change into, and he’s hurt by that. He knows that he shouldn’t have to change, and he thought that Sybil knew that too, but he read  her comment to mean the opposite, and that hurts. That hurts when you think you know someone, but they turn out to disappoint you. This is what’s happening. He’s worried that she thinks he should change, when he shouldn’t change really.

    Bet On Me

So here’s is the FINAL draft. I’ve tweeked it quite a bit in a few places because I was playing the piano part this morning and I realised something…the melody for “Such Good Luck” (aka Mary and Matthew’s music) fitted perfectly at one point. So I’ve fiddled about, and managed to put that in somewhere, as well as “Damaged” (Anna and Bates’ theme) and “Emancipation” (Sybil and Tom’s theme). See if you can spot them in there! And yes, it does sound a bit crowded at the moment, but once it’s nicely recorded and mixed and mastered, it will sound fine I’m sure. Oh and, the flute that you here will actually be a pennywhistle in the final recording, just so you know.

Here’s the lyrics once again:

(intro)

(v1)

Summer days,

A pale green haze,

Our fingers entwined,

The clouds of war rolled back

and caused my change of mind,

(v2)

Your strong and passionate words

spoken softly as we drive,

Now standing here my doubts are gone,

I’ve come alive,

(chorus)

From this day forward

I’m falling, falling,

one life together,

I’m falling deeper in love,

(v3)

Who could have guessed that things would go

the way that they did?

To deny the truth in what we know;

our love forbid

(chorus)

From this day forward

I’m falling, falling,

One life together,

I’m falling deeper in love,

(instrumental people!! Da da da da da)

(middle eight)

I’m devoting every waking minute,

You can bet on me,

My love will keep on burning eternally,

Forget the world around us

and it’s twisted ways,

I’ll stay with you forever

in that summer haze,

(chorus)

From this day forward

I’m falling, falling,

One life together,

I’m falling, falling,

From this day forward,

I’m falling, falling,

One life together,

I’m falling deeper in love.
